At Joint Colleges Nursery we can offer you childcare of a quality that is unequalled in the Cambridge area. The exceptional JCN learning experience combines the fun of play with high quality education to provide an excellent start in life. We believe that there are several essential components to the JCN formula, set out below, which combine to create this special experience.
Top Quality Staff
At JCN we are proud of the quality of our team. Our reputation and competitive rates of pay allow us to attract the very best carers in the area. Members of our team are constantly encouraged to further their childcare skills through training which JCN funds. Our commitment to staff development, excellent opportunities for career advancement and the friendly JCN atmosphere mean that we have a happy team with extremely low rates of turnover. Children at JCN therefore enjoy contact with familiar faces throughout their time at the nursery.
Excellent Facilities
Our purpose built accommodation on Chaucer Road is specially designed for children. Based on one level, unlike the converted residential properties which house many of Cambridge’s nurseries, our buildings are safe and located in an area of the City which is quiet but convenient. Off road parking is provided for parents and we are only a ten minute walk from the train station.
Outdoor play is considered an important part of the day at JCN and children enjoy a large garden. Babies have access to a separate play area adjoining the Baby Room which is specially equipped for them whilst in the main garden children have access to a range of exciting play equipment. We believe it is important to encourage each child to relate to both younger and older children and the outdoor play area gives children the opportunity to interact with other age groups at JCN.
Not-For-Profit
JCN is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a management committee of parents. The organisation was set up to provide high quality nursery care for children of Cambridge and our structure ensures that this is the objective towards which our efforts are always directed, rather than extracting profit. Unlike other Cambridge nurseries, we do not have to balance the profit and quality objectives. You can therefore be assured that your child receives excellent care from JCN and that its cost will be competitive.
A Vibrant Community
JCN welcomes children from many diverse backgrounds. We celebrate festivals from many different cultures and encourage children to speak their mother tongue whilst at JCN through our music sessions.
Parents form an important part of the JCN community. Any parent may apply to be on the management committee of JCN and be responsible for its policy decisions. Meanwhile, the Head of Nursery and our staff are always happy to discuss your child’s progress and development.
Our History
Joint Colleges Nursery is one of the oldest nurseries in Cambridge, established in the 1970s. Our accumulated experience ensures that the activities which your child participates in are fun and valuable to their development.
Although JCN has been the grateful recipient of financial support from several of the University of Cambridge colleges since our formation over a quarter of a century ago, we are in no way restricted to admitting applications from those affiliated with the University. You do not need any relationship with the University to send your child to JCN.
Every Day Care
Unlike the vast majority of other nurseries, JCN offers care solely on a 5 day a week basis: parents have the option of sending their children to JCN for either five mornings, five afternoons or five full days per week. We believe that this approach is best for the children, parents and staff. Young children benefit from the routine provided by going to JCN 5 days a week and build stronger relationships with each other and their carers, whilst parents have more opportunities to get to know the nursery team. This helps to create the friendly JCN atmosphere and allows staff to provide high quality individual care to the children.
