The Playroom at JCN

At about three years of age children move into the Playroom. Learning continues to be based around play, with the six Early Learning Goals achieved whilst children are having fun.

Many activities are laid out by staff throughout the day for children to participate in. Water and sand play are popular, as is painting, messy play, cooking and building. The Playroom is also equipped with a computer, allowing children to become familiar with information technology at an early age. Children are encouraged to play both individually and with others, spending time at the activities of their own choice. At specific points during the day pre-school children join those in the Playroom. This interaction between older and younger children allows the development of a different set of social skills. Staff supervise, assist and join in with what the children are doing.

At 'snack time' one child acts as a 'helper' for a day, in charge of sharing out cups and a snack. This gives children the change to take on responsibility and improve basic organising and social skills.

As with all groups at JCN, outdoor play is an important part of the day. At this stage, however, with parental permission, children are taken for short outings to explore the surrounding environment.
