At JCN, babies are encouraged to explore and play with toys in a warm and happy environment. We provide a consistent, structured routine, giving children the comfort of a familiar pattern to their day. Children are stimulated by the use of age-appropriate toys and constant interaction with top quality staff.
The Baby Room provides for 9 children typically from the age of 4 months until 15-18 months, at which point they are ready for more challenging activities. The ratio of staff to children is 1:3, in accordance with the Childrens Act 1989.
We treat each baby as an individual and try to match activities as closely as possible with their own routine at home. There are opportunities during the day for one-to-one and group activities, as well as story time, sleep periods and walks. Outside activities take place all through the year in a specially equipped outside play area and garden separate from that used by the other age groups.
Babies are encouraged to feed themselves with a spoon and cup, to ask for 'more please' and to sit at the table appropriately.
Every month a broad theme is provided by keyworkers around which activities are centred for example colours, numbers, animals, shopping, body and face recognition or singing. Staff work closely with parents and record the progress of their children as they learn new skills. At the end of each day, parents are given a detailed note describing the activities their child has participated in.
By the time children move into the Tweenie Room, they are well equipped with the basic skills they need.
